1. Define the job
Every guide starts with a specific reader problem, not a keyword. We write down who the guide is for, what constraints they have, and what a good outcome looks like before we look at a single product.
2. Build the field
We assemble the credible options across price points — including direct-to-consumer brands, legacy names, and pharmacy or supermarket staples — then read the specs, formulations and independent testing data behind them.
3. Apply disqualifiers
- Proprietary blends that hide dosing.
- Efficacy claims that outrun the evidence.
- No third-party testing in categories where it matters.
- Persistent quality-control or fulfilment complaints.
- Manufacturing or labour practices the brand won’t disclose.
4. Test the shortlist
Survivors go into real use under the process described in how we test.
5. Rank by fit, not by score
We award “best for” positions rather than a single winner wherever the right answer depends on the person. Where there is a genuine overall best, we say so plainly and explain what it beats.
What never affects a ranking
Commission rates, ad spend, PR relationships, sample generosity, or a brand’s willingness to participate. Full detail in our affiliate disclosure and advertising policy.
