A sofa is the second most expensive soft purchase most households make after a mattress, and it is the one people research least. The result is a familiar cycle: a good-looking piece that sags in eighteen months and gets replaced by another one.

What separates a ten-year sofa
- Frame — kiln-dried hardwood, corner-blocked and either doweled or screwed. Particleboard and stapled softwood are the tell.

- Cushion core — high-resiliency foam at 1.8 lb density or better, ideally wrapped in down or fiber. Low-density foam is why cushions flatten.

Measure before you fall in love
Measure the room, then measure the path the furniture takes to get into it: doorway width, stair turns, elevator depth, and ceiling clearance on the landing. Leave 30 to 36 inches for walkways and 14 to 18 inches between sofa and coffee table. A sectional that fits the room but not the stairwell is a delivery fee and a restocking charge.
The advantage of a physical showroom
Filtering online by brand is efficient, but the last step should happen in person. Sit for a full five minutes, not five seconds. Push down on the arm and the front rail to feel for frame flex. Lift one end — weight correlates with frame quality more reliably than any spec sheet. Ask what is on display versus what is special order, because lead times on upholstery routinely run eight to twelve weeks, and ask specifically what the warranty covers on frame, springs, foam, and fabric, since those are usually four different terms.
